| CEO’s Creative Approach Protects Jobs By Andrea K. Hammer, director of Artsphoria As unemployment soared in 2009, Korman Communities’ CEO and board chairman urged executives to resist recession-induced layoffs. Steven Korman, 69, placed ads in The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times, featuring his plea to business leaders. In addition, he wrote to CEOs of corporations where he owns stock. Steven Korman “We don’t give enough credit to people who do the right thing. I think a lot of people sit down with their people and say, ‘Look, there might not be any increases this year. We might have to ask you to work four days instead of five and pay you for four because we want to keep some other people. We might ask you to work four out of five weeks and take the fifth off without pay,’” he said. “But the biggest thing, from a business standpoint, is that up and down, starting and stopping, is crazy. None of us is bright enough to know if in 6 months we’ll be in a good economy or bad. Therefore, if you let people go, and it’s a good economy and you need them back, you might not get them back. Then you need to train new people. And the people you kept say, ‘I’ll go somewhere else because you’re not loyal.’” Korman attributed mutual loyalty as the reason most of his employees have worked with him for 25 to 40 years. “You’re dealing with human lives. You’re going to send someone home to face his or her husband or wife and say, ‘Honey, I don’t have a job, and I can’t get one in this economy. You don’t want to do that unless you have to,” he stressed. This online extra highlights additional material from an interview for an article in the summer 2009 issue of Family Business Magazine. |
