| Watercolors and Oils by Mary Rakay for Sale |
| Interestingly enough, as a young person, I was taught that “when a door closes, God opens a window.” That is exactly what happened to me when I retired. Being a registered nurse who worried about the limitations of an ongoing back problem, I found painting a wonderful and satisfying experience that has removed the anxiety of getting older. A neighbor of mine is a watercolor instructor at the local senior center and encouraged me to join his class after I expressed interest in “always wanting to draw and paint.” Not knowing what this was all about and never having picked up a watercolor brush, I joined the class in 2004 and have been dabbling ever since. "Labor of Love" (watercolor) by Mary Rakay. Prints available; request details at mhrakay1@comcast.net. Then, about two years ago, I met a wonderful oil teacher who really encouraged me to venture out and take her oil painting class. She opened new doors (windows in this case). She is a college-trained artist, well known in this area, and has mentored many students. Her command of color mixture and techniques continue to inspire me not only in watercolors but oil painting. I find this is an ongoing learning experience of which I have not even touched the surface. I feel blessed to have found this later in my life. ~ Mary Rakay Canton, Mich. |
